The Prophecy for Bhadra the Illusionist
སྒྱུ་མ་མཁན་བཟང་པོ་ལུང་བསྟན་པ། · sgyu ma mkhan bzang po lung bstan pa
Bhadramāyākāravyākaraṇa
Summary
While the Buddha Śākyamuni is residing at Vulture Peak Mountain, in the nearby city of Rājagṛha the accomplished illusionist Bhadra hatches a scheme to humiliate the Buddha and disprove his omniscience in order to win over the people of Magadha. The failure of Bhadra’s plan, in which he conjures the illusion of a resplendent courtyard that, to his dismay, cannot be undone, culminates in a series of surreal and magnificent visions that convince Bhadra of the superiority of the Buddha’s powers. This sūtra presents a colorful and often humorous narrative and contains teachings on illusion, emptiness, and the distinction between the illusionist’s mundane abilities and the Buddha’s miraculous display. The Buddha also teaches Bhadra forty-three sets of four qualities that together constitute the bodhisattva path.

Buddhapiṭakaduḥśīlanigraha
Summary
When Śāriputra voices amazement at how the Buddha uses words to point out the inexpressible ways in which nothing has true existence, the Buddha responds with an uncompromising teaching on how the lack of true existence and the absence of a self are indeed not simply philosophical views but the very cornerstone of the Dharma. To have understood, realized, and applied them fully is the main quality by which someone may be considered a member of the saṅgha and authorized to teach others and to receive offerings. Those who persist in perceiving anything—even elements of the path and its results—as having any kind of true existence are committing the most serious of all violations of discipline (śīla), and since they fail to follow the Buddha’s core teaching in this way they should not even be considered his followers. The Buddha’s dialogue with Śāriputra continues on the consequences of monks’ violating their discipline more broadly, and he gives several prophecies about the future decline of the Dharma that will be caused by the misbehavior of such monks.

Chapters on Monastic Discipline, Chapter 2: On the Rite of Restoration
གསོ་སྦྱོང་གི་གཞི། · gso sbyong gi gzhi/
Poṣadhavastu
Summary
The Chapter on Purification narrates the origins of the monastic “confession” ceremony. This ceremony, called Poṣadha in Sanskrit, is the very foundation of monastic life throughout Asia. To this day, monks and nuns gather twice a month for Poṣadha to reaffirm their vows and restore the bonds that knit together the monastic community. This text provides detailed instructions on how to purify mind and monastic discipline through the practice of meditation and the formal Poṣadha confession rite, respectively. Its translation into English will be of great value to non-Tibetan speaking saṅghas who seek to uphold the Buddha’s monastic tradition.

A Section of the Chapter on Mantras of "The Supreme"
རྟོག་པའི་དུམ་བུ། · rtog pa'i dum bu/
Paramādyamantrakalpakhaṇḍa
Summary
This text is classified as a Yogatantra. In India, this tantra was united with the previous text in the Kangyur (Toh 487) as a single text. But in the Tibetan Kangyur they are represented as two individual texts, since different teams of translators rendered the two parts into Tibetan at different times. The teacher of the tantra is Vairocana but the rituals also focus on the Buddha Vajrasattva. This latter part of the tantra is longer and consists of forty-four chapters that together comprise the second, third, and fourth sections of the larger work. As such, although it is called the “Chapter on Mantras” it covers many additional instructions. First, a lengthy description is given of the benefits that arise from the practice of the perfection of wisdom as taught in the first part of the tantra. In the remainder of the tantra, the Buddha Vajrasattva emanates the maṇḍalas taught earlier in the text and he teaches in great detail about their connected rituals.
